I picked this up before bed thinking I’d read a few pages but I ended up finishing the whole thing in one sitting. The world building is tight, the stakes feel real, and the ending stuck with me. It’s definitely one of the more memorable short stories I’ve read recently.
The writing is clean and the use of line breaks generates a fast pace, yet it also gives the words a poetic flow. As a short story it works. But it also lacks for a protagonist, someone to cheer for.
