Early in my writing career I received very painful comments from a few different editors. Years later, I don’t think anything was so helpful to my writing career. So, I’ll give this book a much needed review. The idea of the book is good. There are a moments of good writing. But this is all overshadowed by the problems that would be picked up by an honest edit. The biggest problem was with the narrative voice. The author shifts between characters perspectives without breaking chapters or sections. Worse than that, the narration often shifts to an omnipresence that is not a part of the storyline. That’s to say the narration talks about things that cannot be observed by any character in the book. This rarely works in fiction. The second biggest problem was character development. The two main characters, Isabel and Elijah are too perfect. They need edges, and alluding to a dark past is not enough. They need to struggle with issues of morality here and there. Also, things happen too fast with them. The meet and in no time they completely trust each other like long lost friends. This happens with others they meet too. This causes the story to lack the edge post apocalyptic fiction needs. Overall, I think this book needs a qualified editor. And I don’t mean a proofread either. Parts of it need to be completely rewritten. I cannot recommend this book as it is.

Embers of Redemption is a great read for lovers of romance books. Isabel and her friend-in-arms battle for their freedom against the evil Sarah. Quick moving and intense.

Marcus Flint’s novel, Embers of Redemption, is set in a post-apocalyptic world devastated by nuclear war. Marcus is a skilled writer who can write colorful sentences complete with similes. The story is plot-driven. The dialog is mostly just a few whispered words followed by lengthy explanations of the character’s feelings. Isabel struggles to survive when she meets Elijah, and they fall in love. Bandits and scavengers are trying to kill them. The two characters run from and fend off enemies. Then, they try to stop a plot to engineer superior beings genetically. The plot gradually becomes more complicated, and there are a few plot twists along the way. Marcus writes excellent sentences, but his story needs more in-depth structure—it would have been better if it had a hook, inciting incident, plot points, and a tension-filled climax.

I liked the way the author utilized a dangerous plot that drew two complete strangers together, whose survival depended on each other. A treacherous journey that developed into a beautiful love story, written so well it allowed you to experience it with them. A must read.

This is a great novel full of intrigue, suspense, and mystery. The plot is fast-paced, the characters are engaging, and the world is well developed. All in all, this is a fantastic read!
