I recently read this book, and honestly, it really resonated with me. It's a raw and honest memoir that delves into some really tough life experiences. Usher doesn't shy away from sharing her mistakes, and it's incredibly refreshing. What struck me most was her vulnerability. She openly discusses how her poor choices impacted her life, and she doesn't sugarcoat anything. But the book isn't just about dwelling on the past. It's a powerful testament to resilience. Usher shows how she learned from her mistakes and found the strength to rebuild her life. I think the book is a great reminder that we all make mistakes, and that's okay. What matters is how we learn and grow from them. Usher's story is truly inspiring and I highly recommend it to anyone who needs a dose of hope and encouragement.
This non-fiction piece is about a brave woman who is courageous enough to share her story, even when it's a story that happens way too often. It may not be perfect, but it's a story for the younger generation to grasp who often find themselves in the same situation. No one can force someone to love them and believing you can change a person is the wrong mindset to have. I too have been manipulated by men who shower with attention before suddenly taking it away. Women often believe it's their fault, and put too much time and energy into loving a person who doesn't love them back. If a man gives up on you, it's time to move on before you find yourself in a situation outside of your control. Never depend on a man. They count on that. I recommend this book to every girl out there who finds themselves in a situation with a boy where they start questioning everything about themselves and think they can fix the problem by giving into what the boy physically wants. If there is an inner voice advising against something, listen to it. The heart may want what it wants, but sometimes it's a game a boy plays. Don't be another victim.
I'm Still Standing Here by Candi Usher is a gripping and unflinchingly honest memoir of survival in the face of abusive relationships, self-doubt, and personal transformation. Written from the perspective of Cherise, the story unfolds with raw intensity as she recounts the turbulent journey through her youth, challenging relationships, and the inner strength she developed along the way. Usher skillfully brings to light the painful cycles of abuse and manipulation, revealing the emotional impact of each choice and the moments of vulnerability and courage that defined Cherise’s path. The narrative captures both the innocence and resilience of Cherise, creating a deeply relatable character who learns to navigate love, betrayal, and self-worth. Usher’s portrayal of domestic abuse and its psychological toll is courageous, shedding light on how difficult it can be to break free from the grip of toxic love. The book’s power lies in its authenticity and the message of hope that emerges from Cherise’s story. For readers looking for a story of overcoming hardship and reclaiming personal strength, I'm Still Standing Here is both a sobering and inspiring read.
I found myself hanging on every word of this book. It wasn't that I liked the narrator. I had mixed emotions for her. I think most people would. It would be a good story to read and discuss in a group. I recommend it if you like psychologically immersive stories.
It's a great story.. with some funny moments..Men cheat way too much for me. The only reason I gave this a 4 was that the design elements for the covers and formatting inside the book could be much better.
