Bull In A China Shop by Mike Toyne is based on his father's memoirs. His father, Merritt, grew up on a farm and was expected to be a farmer, but Mike tells his story by emphasizing his journey to cow buying, which was successful and lasted for 30 years. The story brings back so many memories of the great days of low prices, no internet, just good old wholesome living. The pictures resonated as a close, down-to-earth family that went through things like any natural family. There was lots of love, struggles, death, sorrow, and much success. One can learn much about cow buying. Mike knew of his father's sports in school, his service, his love life, relationships he shared with his family members, and even information about his father's prior experience with his Mom before they were married. Mike told this story very well, causing us to feel like we were in that period, how baby boomers would enjoy remembering prices so low for many things. I could not believe the prices shown for some products. I am sure Merritt Toyne is delighted that his son shared a well-deserved story that left good feelings for others. I love the book's cover, which shows the calm, colorful, beautiful, American countryside with the bull representing the story title. It was a good read.

This book reads kind of like someone's diary. It doesn't have that format, but the information is like that. I think some people will enjoy this book. The author seems to have a good-ole' boy mentality. I think others with that mentality, especially older people, might enjoy it. I don't think these words will change anyone's life or inform them in a meaningful way. But the audience I mentioned is likely to enjoy it.
I found this to be a truly inspirational story. Bull In A China Shop is a touching tale of a farm boys journey to the cattle business during the Depression. It is a story of determination and resilience highlighting the values of faith family and hard work that shaped America. The characters filled with courage and honesty make a lasting impact. A mustread for those inspired by our countrys history.
