Is This Really Happening?: "What to do When There's a Dangerous Person at School" is an excellent book to teach children what to do in a crisis at school when they are in danger of gun violence or some other uncontrolled emotions. The story shows when someone is out of control of their feelings, and there are children and teachers all over the school, scared but in control because they have practiced for this moment. The victim is armed with a gun and running rampant around the school. The principal announces, "Lockdown! Locks, lights, out of sight! Repeat! Lockdown! Locks, Lights, out of sight! This announcement is an activity they had practiced, so they knew what to do, although they were scared. They had learned to take three deep breaths to calm down. Staying low, quiet, and out of sight while the teacher turned off the lights and barricaded the door with a chair is what saved these children until the police arrived on the scene. After the teacher verifies safety with the office, the children are free—their parents take them home early. Every parent and child should read this book to learn how to protect themself/their child in a violent crisis in schools.
The book could definitely be used as a teaching tool for a specific lesson or highlighted on a certain day at a school. Good illustrations and great job talking about a scary but real topic for children
This has become a big and important topic for school children of all ages. The other does a pretty good job with a very hard subject. Something about it feels off to me though. I'm just not sure if it's going to be super affective for the age group it appears to be geared towards.
OK the teacher is like Bambi - the deer - except she's all grown up and has a pretty nice figure too. She's pretty fine and things are going good until the shooting starts, and you know how much deer love shooting. None at all. The kids have already drilled for this so they know what to do - keep quiet and do what Bambi says while she locks the door and turns out the lights and moves the kids over by the wall where they can't be seen. Stay quiet and listen for the all clear. It's a good lesson and one I never had to practice. I think I'd like it better if it was a little less wordy - definitely not a pre-schooler book - although pre-schoolers probably have to drill sometimes too. Practice makes perfect, eh?
I like the pictures and coloring of this book. This book prepares school children on what to do, if there happens to be shooting in school. I recommend all parent to buy it for their elementary school children.
Sad that we need books like this but it does a good job of preparing kids for these kinds of traumatic situations. Anything that can help prepare kids and reinforce how to respond to situations like this are worth its weight in gold. Nice Job. Thank you.
I think this book was executed very well given its purpose. The bright and colorful characters will likely hold children's interest. Taking the right actions leading to a happy ending will likely have a positive impact on children's behavior. I recommend this book to be read in a classroom setting. It would probably be best to read and discuss the content with younger children.
sadly, we are in a world where this happens, the illustrations are good and has a nice backstory, and no one gets hurt so that's nice.
I received a free copy of this book and left my feedback voluntarily. This book is well written, and the illustrations are great. Honestly, I felt very scared reading it and it makes me want to homeschool my son. I am not sure if a book like this helps kids get ready "just in case" or may unecessarily scare them. I personally do believe in the power of manifestation, so I may choose not to put this into my child's consciousness, but that is very personal, and other parents may think differently. So I give it 5 stars based on the fact that if a parent does need such a book, this one is written and illustrated well and will be great for the purpose it is intended for.
