Peter Von Perle has a talent for drawing you in with his skillful character descriptions and his carefully crafted world. As the prequel to Blood for Pearls, MOUSSANE: the River's Daughter, shows us the beginning of the story. The simplicity and beauty that Moussane and her tribe have of living with nature is the background. Moussane's gift to see the future can also be a curse. The evil she sees about to befall her people is terrifying. If you haven't read Blood for Pearls, this will prompt you to do so. If you have read it, then this is like the cherry on the top of a sundae.
In this book, the writer's talent is clearly revealed. Every little thing is properly described. I like it when writers make me see clearly what they are talking about. I recommend.
Moussane: The River’s Daughter by Peter Von Perle is a beautifully crafted historical fiction novella that transports the reader to the banks of the Gambia River during a time of profound cultural upheaval. The narrative pulled me in with its vivid atmosphere, spiritual undercurrents, and emotional intensity. Moussane, a mother and spiritual seer, carries the burden of a vision foretelling the coming horrors of the slave trade. Despite being pregnant, she rises to warn her people, standing as a voice of strength in a world about to change forever. The story is short but deeply evocative, blending mysticism with real historical trauma in a way that feels both timeless and interesting. The author opens a door into a vibrant African culture where the spirit world is interwoven with daily life, and where resistance begins with foresight and courage.
