This is an incredibly well written book of the highest calibre. It will appeal to feminist readers as well as enlightened thinkers. The illustrations are very nice and detailed (I can`t work out if they are original or AI generated, but they are very complimentary). The storyline itself is classically written. It follows an arc that may seem predictable but in some ways it really isn`t. The ending really ruffles your idea of where the book was going, which I REALLY enjoyed. There’s something tender but harrowing in Edna Pontellier’s journey—like watching someone slowly shed borrowed skin. The Awakening isn’t a tale of rebellion for its own sake, but of an inward blooming that refuses to stay small. Chopin writes with saltwater clarity: each line glistening, each silence deliberate. Edna’s yearning for freedom—creative, sensual, existential—is not loud, but it echoes. And the sea, ever-present, is no antagonist; it’s where she finally feels most herself. This is a book that doesn’t flinch. It invites you into the uneasy spaces between conformity and selfhood, and leaves you with that ache—the beautiful kind, the kind that lingers. Essential for anyone who’s ever questioned where they end and expectation begins. An interesting and helpful Biography of the writer gives some context at the end. I really recommend this book. It will appeal to anyone who enjoys well-written literature, whether they enjoy the premise of the story or not. I really did and was surprised at how well constructed it was. Five stars for this, for sure. You will not be disappointed.
What makes this beautifully written 19th-century novel particularly engaging is how the author delves into Edna Pontellier’s hidden emotions and her awakening as she allows her feelings to surface. She gradually examines these emotions to uncover deeper truths about her identity and explore her longings for greater self-expression as a woman. I felt immersed in a vintage setting, where the characters and their surroundings are described in lush detail. I could easily imagine one of Edna’s closest friends as a captivating woman with a peach tint, as if she stepped straight out of a Renoir painting. The author masterfully portrays the personalities and motivations of Edna’s family and friends as they endeavor to influence her journey while she asserts her growing independence.
