The battle being waged inside Quentin’s mind is expanded into explorations of the inherited traumas of family (Tokyo) and nationhood (Afghanistan). The book is literary fiction and experiments with thriller and war genres while maintaining the overall theme of an individual mind struggling with a mental health condition. No matter how bad Quentin’s condition gets, there is always a sense of hope within the novel. This is a truthful and unflinching literary depiction of living with OCD.
