I work behind-the-scenes in the tourism industry and was very interested to read this book and see if there might be some useful tips and tricks to provide to our walking tour guides. I appreciated how different kinds of walking tours were represented, from historical tours to nature/garden and 'foodie' tours. There was some good advice, such as route planning based on construction or closed venues and the importance of head counts. I would have found it to helpful to discuss things like what to do if it starts pouring rain midway through a walking tour or if guests are lagging very far behind the group/decide not to continue with the group based on the pace. I felt the section on marketing would be useful to small operators and entrepreneurs. Quite a scant volume for the price but I think this could be a useful primer for newbies.
When you travel, you take for granted the individuals who choose to make being a tour guide a career. However, we are all thankful for those individuals who help us out when we are unfamiliar with a place we travel to. The thing is, we are all capable of being a tour guide to the areas we know best. This guide helps you embrace thinking of turning that idea into a profitable business, even if it's a side job to make extra income. Lots of good information to absorb even if one is just curious.
Walking Tours The Ultimate Walking Tour Guide's Handbook is an exceptional resource for anyone looking to start a walking tour business. The book covers everything from creating engaging tours to managing a successful business. It highlights the immersive and rewarding nature of tour guiding, showing how it can enhance your skills and broaden your perspective. Whether you're new to the field or an experienced guide looking to refine your craft, this handbook offers invaluable insights and practical advice. A must-read for anyone passionate about sharing their love of history and culture through walking tours.
This book is very comprehensive in covering things to incorporate into creating a tour. It covers insurance, adequate preparation, physical limitations, hydration, rest periods, and so much more. There are things in this book you might not even think about unless you've actually done it. Well worth checking out.
