I like the humanity of the characters who are just trying to live in a difficult world. The world-building is well done, and the tale winds through Dantian’s life of terrible choices and hope. I enjoyed the book and look forward to the next.
This book thrusts you into rich world-building, and politics threaded through a world of dark magic. It was a very immersive read and relentless in its approach, sometimes getting granular with details. There are some classic tropes of women being dominated by men, which is something I get a bit tired of reading, tbh, but all in all, it's a great start to the series.
