Wonderfully told, but just a tad disappointing because of the use of virtual voice. The story is slow, the romance slow-burn and the spiciness is totally believable. Please, please, get a proper partnership with a publisher to get a real actor to do read. Hoghly recommended for spicy romance lovers.
If you haven’t been the target of mean girls in your life, you should probably have a heart to heart with the mirror. But Seli knew they were mean and still hung out with them - for ten years. While I could completely empathize with some of her issues and baggage, no doubt, I’ve known too many people like this - so desperate to believe money fixes trauma. But it was never about the person not having money. It could have been anything: that you had freckles the wrong shape. That’s who these people are, and bullies and abusers just look for whatever you believe is weak about yourself - to gain power over you. So the repeated references to how her childhood had to be made up for, for a 30 year old woman, just came across as childish. Repeated references to how city life was somehow a magical proving ground where life was suddenly “winning”? That certainly wasn’t born of any sort of reality that working for 10 years in the city, in the limelight, should have already made obvious. Some of her rich but sleazy clients and the amount of lying she had to do… It just made no sense to me that she’d still see “city life” and a “big city job” as some trophy - after the way she was “ousted”. And since that grated on me, it threw some of the rest of the “real” ness off-kilter. Cam had about the same amount of EQ. That said, the message of it all was solid and important. We chase facsimiles of value forgetting what is truly valuable. More, disposable things instead of quality, lasting pieces that make up a life and relationships and the cornerstones of experiences. 4 stars for the effort and intention, the messaging and focus on foster kids. I’m interested in Lily’s tale. Possibly Jordan’s - as both of these side characters had deeper roots.
With witty writing, authentic characters, and just the right amount of steam, this story is about second chances, letting go of the past, and discovering love in the most unexpected places. A strong start to the series, perfect for readers who love their romance with spice and soul.
This book had me hooked right from the start! If you’re into romance that mixes tension, humor, and loads of heart, you definitely need to check this one out!
Seli is a character I initially thought I wouldn’t like—whiny and a bit too complain-y. But the author did an amazing job of developing her into someone I couldn’t help but root for. The chemistry between her and Cam is absolutely electric, and I was hooked from the very first page. A fantastic read!
